JANEIL HOOTEN BERNARD

1938-2017

Janeil Hooten Bernard was born May 9, 1938, on a ranch in Bordulac, ND. After briefly living in Los Angeles, the entire family moved to Texas where she spent the remainder of her life.

She graduated from the University of Texas in 1959, as a proud member of the Alpha Phi Sorority, with a BS in Business Education and an English Minor. After graduating, she spent several years teaching 4th Grade for the Spring Branch Independent School District. She then married and raised her two boys, Kevin and Doren, and committed herself to volunteering. She was an active alum with Alpha Phi and dedicated much of her time to the American Heart Association. Eventually, she went back to work as an accountant and financial advisor which she continued to do for the remainder of her life.

Janeil had two great passions in her life beyond her family: reading and dancing.

She started dancing as a young girl and never stopped. She was active in several dance clubs including square dancing, ballroom and clogging. She had most recently been involved in the world of ballroom dance competition where she was a recognizable and much-loved dancer with many awards to her name. She volunteered frequently with USA Dance, assisting in fund raising and record keeping. The passion to dance kept her healthy, happy and strong to her last day.

She is predeceased by her parents, Joe and Janis Hooten, and her two husbands, Don Bernard and William Bland. She is survived by her sons, Doren and wife, Eva; Kevin and wife, Heather; her grandchildren, Billie and Henderson; and her brother and his wife, Jeran and Janet Hooten.

A memorial service will be held in Houston at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay, at 2pm on Saturday, July 8th, with a reception to follow at the Church.
