Which Houston team’s GM is best?
If you had to rank the general managers of the three major teams in Houston, what would your list be?
It’s a topic I’ve been thinking about a lot since Jerome Solomon, fellow columnist and host of the Chronicle’s weekly sports show Texas Sports Nation, posed the question to me.
That night, Jerome, Randy McIlvoy and I started the interesting conversation on the show. (Which you should definitely watch Sundays at 11 p.m. on KPRC.)
We didn’t have time to really dig in on the air but it really made me think. On the spot, each of us ranked the general managers in Houston.
I was right about Jerome’s pick. Probably because it’s the pick that makes the most sense.
Jeff Luhnow. You simply can’t argue against the Astros mastermind. He has the best team in his sport right now.
Five Astros are AllStars. They have the best record, the most exciting offense. Plus, the way the team was constructed took real time, commitment and flat-out intelligence.
So if Luhnow is your No. 1, you are probably right and it makes perfect sense.
I have to take a different approach, though. At this time every summer for the past few years, I’m glued to my phone.
I know that Daryl Morey is going to do something. He’s going to surprise us, entertain us, keep us on our toes.
He did that last week by making major moves, acquiring Chris Paul and P.J. Tucker.
Morey isn’t done. I will continue to be one of the very socially rude people walking around in public places starting at my twitter feed, checking my text messages repeatedly to see what he does next.
For the sheer, edge-of-yourseat entertainment factor, I would pick Morey as my top GM in Houston right now.
Randy sided with me and gave the slight edge to Morey. Jerome then told us both he would be more entertaining if he brought a championship to town. Touché.
The one thing we all agreed on is that Rick Smith and the Texans have some catching up to do. About that quarterback
situation …
