Andrus lifts Rangers in 10th

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Elvis Andrus homered early and then snapped a 10th-inning tie with a two-out infield single that gave the struggling Texas Rangers a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night.

Andrus, who homered in the first inning, hit a sharp grounder off Brad Boxberger (2-1) that forced Evan Longoria to make a diving stop.

Pinch runner Delino Shields scored when the third baseman was unable to complete the throw to first.

Alex Claudio (2-0) pitched two innings in relief of Yu Darvish to get the win. The lefthander gave up a leadoff single to Steven Souza Jr. in the 10th but avoided further damage by getting Adeiny Hechavarri­a to bunt into a double play and Mallex Smith to fly out. Texas ended a five-game losing streak. CARDINALS 11, CUBS 4: Paul DeJong hit a tiebreakin­g two-run double in St. Louis’ nine-run eighth inning to cool off host Chicago, which carried a 3-2 lead into the eighth and was looking for its seventh consecutiv­e win.

PHILLIES 6, BREWERS 1: Aaron Nola tied a career-high with nine strikeouts in seven sharp innings, Freddy Galvis hit a two-run homer, and Philadelph­ia beat visiting Milwaukee. Nola (7-6) allowed one run and five hits.

METS 7, ATHLETICS 5: Michael Conforto hit a pair of tworun homers, and Jerry Blevins rescued New York’s bullpen with a five-out save to help held off visiting Oakland for its third straight victory.

MARLINS 3, REDS 1: Jose Urena pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning, Christian Yelich drove in two runs, and Miami opened a six-game road trip with a rain-delayed victory at Cincinnati.

TIGERS 6, TWINS 3: Victor Martinez hit two home runs as Detroit won at Minnesota. Anibal Sanchez (2-0) gave up three runs and six hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 52⁄3 innings for Detroit.

INDIANS 13, BLUE JAYS 3: Edwin Encarnacio­n homered and drove in four runs against his former team, and Cleveland broke open a close game with an eight-run seventh inning to rout visiting Toronto.

PIRATES 13, ROCKIES 5: Rookie Josh Bell had a careerhigh four hits, Andrew McCutchen had three hits and reached base five times, and Pittsburgh won at Colorado.

ROYALS 7, WHITE SOX 6 (10): Whit Merrifield’s sacrifice fly in the 10th inning lifted Kansas City past visiting Chicago.
