Woman killed, dragged in hit-and-run
A woman is dead after being dragged by a car for several hundred feet in northeast Harris County, an incident that caused a shutdown early Monday of the feeder roads along Interstate 69.
The woman’s body was found about 4 a.m. at a turning area beneath I-69 near the Aldine Mail Route exit, said Deputy Thomas Gilliland with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
It is unclear what time the woman — who appeared to have been in her 30s — was hit, Gilliland said.
Deputies believe a car traveling northbound struck her on the feeder road about a half-mile south of where the body was found, Gilliland added. The woman’s body got caught on the undercarriage of the car.
The woman appeared to have been homeless, Gilliland said. Her possessions — a purse, papers — were scattered across the road near Northington. Her body came loose at an area where motorists can make a U-turn.
Deputies believe the car then veered onto the southbound feeder lanes of I-69, leaving the scene.
Remains scattered across the frontage roads in both directions caused a shutdown of the feeder lanes near East Mount Houston for several hours after the fatal collision, according to Houston Transtar.
Deputies lacked a suspect or car description in the aftermath of the collision. They searched the area Monday morning to try to track down debris from the car that may give a clue as to who the driver was.
