A Harris County judge ruled Thursday that Houston rapper Z-Ro can have no contact with his rapper ex-girlfriend after hearing allegations that the rapper beat her while brandishing a handgun at his Katy-area home in April.

State District Judge George Powell agreed to a motion for emergency protection and a no-contact order as conditions of bail for the well-known rapper, whose real name is Joseph Wayne McVey.

McVey, 40, is free on a $50,000 bond after being arrested Wednesday on a charge of aggravated assault of a family member. He appeared before the judge in a black T-shirt and khaki cargo pants as prosecutors laid out the allegations against him.

After the brief hearing, his attorney, Charles Adams, said McVey is a close personal friend.

“He is one of the nicest, sweetest people I know,” Adams told reporters. “I’m shocked by these allegations.”

During the hearing, Adams told the judge that McVey’s girlfriend has initiated contact with the rapper many times in the three months between the alleged incident in April and her report to the police on Tuesday.

“She continues to initiate contact with my client,” Adams told the judge as he protested the no-contact order. “Both of them were on my radio show together since this allegedly happened.”

The judge cautioned McVey that if he has any contact — such as calls, texts, messages or in person — his bail could be revoked.

His ex-girlfriend, Brittany Bullock, who goes by the stage name Just Brittany, told police McVey slapped her, punched and dragged her for an hour and a half. She said she was assaulted so many times “she eventually got sick and threw up.”

Bullock backed up her claim with a 20-minute audio recording of the alleged assault.

It was April 29 when the couple had a miscommunication about a dinner date, and Bullock went to the rapper’s home near West Side Forest in the Katy area.

When she arrived, there was an altercation in which McVey allegedly began to assault her while holding a pistol. At one point, Bullock asked to go to the bathroom, where she began recording with her phone. The alleged assault continued once she left the bathroom.

Investigators said they could hear McVey say “you’re dead” in the recording as well as sounds that appeared to be slapping, court records show. Police also heard Bullock say, “Why did you just push me?” and “get your (expletive) hands from around my neck.”

Past collaborations

They also heard Bullock crying and asking McVey to stop.

Bullock called the Harris County Sheriff ’s Office about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday to report the assault, almost three months later. It was not clear in court records why there was such a delayed outcry.

Z-Ro and Just Brittany have collaborated in the past. She appeared in a music video with McVey in December.
