1933-2017

-

Shirley Jean Plantowsky Mucasey passed away peacefully on July 29, 2017 after an extended illness. She was born on January 17, 1933 in Galveston, Texas to Sam and Libby Plantowsky of blessed memory. When she passed, Shirley had her beloved husband Leon at her side, and was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Family was Shirley’s greatest pleasure. She was the true Matriarch of the Mucasey Family, and together with her husband Leon, she was the glue that cemented all generations together. Shirley made sure that the family enjoyed a delicious Sabbath meal every Friday night, and her biggest pleasure was to cook her delicious recipes for everyone. Shirley’s culinary talents were well known throughout her community particularly for her prized fig streudel recipe.

Shirley and Leon made their community a priority, sharing their time and generosity with organizations they cared about deeply including Congregation Beth Yeshurun, B’nai Brith, Seven Acres, The State Of Israel, Holocaust Museum Houston and Meals on Wheels. In keeping with their love for education, they supported the Emery Weiner School, the Robert M. Beren Academy, the William S. Malev School and the Shlenker School.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 62 years Leon Mucasey, her loving children, Mark and his wife Judy Mucasey, Debbie and her husband Sheldon Bootin and Michael and his wife Laurie Mucasey. Her grandchildren were her special jewels, including Ariel Becker and her husband Steven, Evan and Marshall Mucasey, Rebecca Nussbaum and her husband Alex, Allison and Hersh Bootin and Andrea, Robyn, and Michelle Mucasey. Shirley’s three great-granchildren were the icing on her cake, Annaelle and Judah Nussbaum and Lily Becker.

The family wishes to thank Shirley’s extended family, her caretakers, Venessia Reynolds, Ishia Owens and Brenda Mouton, and her physician, Dr. Alan Hoffman, who helped Shirley over the past four years.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, July 30 at Beth Jacob Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your favorite charity in her memory.
