MARTIN EARL MCVEY

1946-2017

-

Martin “Marty” Earl McVey, 71, a native Texan and accomplished Houston trial attorney, peacefully passed away on August 3, 2017. He was well known for his grand stature in the court room, his Santa Claus-looking beard, and absolute love for those close to him. Raised in Odessa, Marty quickly distinguished himself with his athletic ability in both baseball and football. He showcased this talent in both sports at the University of Michigan, where he was dubbed with the nickname “Tex”. Upon graduation, he returned to his home state and pursued a law degree at South Texas College of Law. Marty subsequently joined the district attorney’s office, the DEA and eventually opened his own private practice where he defended Houstonians for over 35 years. Marty loved to coach Little League, spend time outdoors (mostly at his beloved lake house), listen to country music and live a simple life. A man wanting to enrich the lives of others, he often played Santa Claus at nursing homes, Texas Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House, while also performing pro bono legal work for the southeast Texas community. He is preceded in death by his parents Stan and Ann. He is survived by his daughter Mattie (husband Keith), son Alex (fiancé Molly), brother Stan (wife Maureen), his two grandsons, and best friend Carlos. He never picked the popular option -- always acting on what he thought was right in his soul and in his faith. He will be remembered for his conviction and tenacity, believing that those around him should always follow and exceed their dreams, which is what he wanted most. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. In lieu of customary remembrances, donations can be made in Marty’s name to Texas Children’s Hospital.
