Panthers’ Newton to miss exhibition

- Staff and wire reports

The Texans won’t face Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in their preseason opener Wednesday night in Charlotte, N.C.

Newton will sit out because of soreness in his right throwing shoulder, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Tuesday.

Other than some light warm-up tosses, Newton hasn’t thrown at Panthers training camp since July 30.

Newton, 28, had surgery in March to repair a partially torn rotator cuff.

He was cleared to participate in training camp practices this summer after missing all of the organized team activities and minicamp.

But the league’s 2015 MVP developed soreness in his shoulder after five practices.

The Panthers plan to have Newton ready for the Sept. 10 regular-season opener against the San Francisco 49ers.

Derek Anderson will start at quarterback against the Texans.

Team schedules open practices

After the Texans return to Houston from training camp in West Virginia, they will have two practices open to the public at Houston Methodist Training Center across the street from NRG Stadium.

The practices will be Aug. 21-22 and begin at 8:30 a.m.

Fans can sign up for tickets to the practices beginning today at houstontexans.com. They can register through 5 p.m. Friday.

Winning fans will be notified by email Monday and be provided two tickets per person, per practice.

As has been the case at previous training camps at home, fans have general seating in the bleachers and can stand around the outside of the field. The NFL’s clear bag policy will be in effect for fans at the practices.

The Texans don’t return from training camp in West Virginia until they play the New England Patriots in a preseason game at NRG Stadium on Aug. 19.

Poole waived after physical

The Texans waived offensive tackle Terry Poole because he failed his physical examination.

Poole had been claimed on waivers from Miami.
