South Bank Seafood Bar

Fish tacos and more at casual dining spot offering great view of downtown

- By Greg Morago 702 W. Dallas, 713-487-0029; southbankseafood.com. Open 11 a.m.-midnight

THE CONCEPT

The former Refinery Burger space in Fourth Ward has been rebranded by owners Michael Collins and Jason Lowery as a casual seafood bar.

THE SPACE

With more than 10,000 square feet, South Bank has abundant seating, including a new extended patio that sports a bar fashioned from a shipping container. Rustic tables and repurposed light fixtures are juxtaposed against walls of white subway tile, rough-hewn wood and pops of yellow and turquoise. The open-air feel is perfect for communal dining at long wood tables. Great view of downtown.

THE FOOD

Plenty of seafood — lobster rolls, fish tacos, peel-and-eat shrimp, crab roll, fried shrimp or catfish baskets, lobster quesadillas and fresh oysters. If you’re a fan of clam chowder, check out the chowder fries — like a poutine but smothered in creamy seafood stew and topped with bacon and chives. Also on the menu: po’boys, salads, wings, turkey-neck gumbo and an indulgent crab fried rice.

THE DRINKS

Draft and canned beer, plus classic craft cocktails including Old Fashioned, mojito, Sazerac and a Floridita Daiquiri. Don’t overlook the cocktails on tap: Strawberry Mule, Sandia Fresca (tequila, mezcal, fresh watermelon juice and agave syrup) and a Hurricane.

ONE MORE THING

Collins and Lowery are looking in EaDo for another concept to add to their portfolio, which also includes Fish restaurant in Midtown and Bovine & Barley downtown.

THE DETAILS

Mondays through Thursdays, 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sundays. Happy hour 3 to 7 p.m. daily with $3 beer, $4 food items and $5 cocktails and wine.
