Tyson Vodochodsky sits in his ford 150 in the rapidly filling parking lot of Boondoggle’s in Seabrook with his eight kayaks in tow Sunday afternoon.

In between glancing at his phone in anticipation of an “all clear” from Houston officials, he looks out over the flooded docks at what was his kayak rental location, Pinky’s.

It’s a popular spot in the Bay Area to rent kayaks and stand-up paddles boards.

“It’s just wood. It really sucks,” said Vodochodsky. “But I’m more concerned about people.”

He tried to make it into Houston where hurricane Harvey has inundated city streets and where many are being rescused from rooftops. He said he heard Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and other officials ask for extra help in the form of boats, kayaks or other water craft.

But he was denied by emergency officials on his way into Houston and had to come back to Seabrook.

He said he’ll have to kayak over to the decimated structure that was his dock to retrieve paddles if he’s going to use his fleet to help rescue people. He knows it’s risky but he’s eager to lend a hand.

“It’s just a matter of getting in the water and reading it just like a river and not getting into a dumb situation,” he said.

“I watched the news all night and They’re calling for help.”
