Disappointed in politician

-

Regarding “Texas GOP’s unity jolted” (Page A3, Tuesday), my family moved to Athens, Texas, in 1986 when I was three years old. It was such a wonderful place to grow up. I am a graduate of Athens High School and have many friends and family that still call East Texas home.

My husband and I have been living in Houston for three years. On Sunday, Aug. 27, we woke up to water coming into our house from every direction. We were rescued by boat along with our pets. Our home, most of our possessions and one car were destroyed by Hurricane Harvey, but thankfully we are safe and determined to rebuild.

On social media, I saw people from Athens sending supplies to help Houston, Rockport, Beaumont, Corpus Christi and everywhere in between. It was so uplifting. Although the cameras are gone, the aftermath of Harvey will linger for a long time. Rebuilding is a painfully slow process.

On Sept. 8, Congress overwhelmingly voted to send aid to Texas. Being personally affected by this storm, I know Texas needs help. Being from Athens, I was saddened when my former congressman, U.S. Rep. Jeb Hensarling, the Republican chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, voted against sending aid to Texas. Other members of Congress from all over the country voted for the relief bill. I am disappointed that Hensarling is being political in the face of human suffering. Elise Angell Cohen, Houston
