A fresh start

With our pantries restocked, these recipes bring us back to familiar, comforting flavors in our post-Harvey kitchens

- By Greg Morago

WE all remember what the supermarket shelves looked like in the days immediately before Hurricane Harvey hit. Even the biggest and best grocery stores were laid bare.

But many Houston-area grocers got back up and running in days, providing not just necessary foods and household goods to a dazed populace but a return to a familiar routine. Some foodstuffs were initially harder to come by, such as bread, milk and eggs. And then there were the lines to endure.

Now that almost three weeks have passed since Harvey changed our lives, we are slowing rebuilding. Many are back at work, back to school, back in their places of worship. And for those fortunate enough to have been spared the worst, back to cooking and the comforting pleasures of the kitchen.

So what do we want to eat after such emotionally and physically draining times? Comfort foods, for sure. But experts say that deprivation and disruptions caused by disasters trigger hungers that can easily be measured at the supermarket checkout.

Post-hurricane food leanings include eggs, meat dishes, hearty soups and stews, fresh vegetables and salads, bread products and easy-to-make recipes that deliver familiar, satisfying flavors.

Sound familiar? We’ve got you covered where recipes are concerned. These are a few dinner suggestions that hit on some of our cravings as we rebuild our lives and our city.
