Treemont assists storm victims

Treemont Retirement Community welcomed many “new neighbors” (storm victims) displaced by Hurricane Harvey, arriving with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Treemont purchased basic furnishings to provide furnished apartments for those needing immediate move-in.

Treemont residents wanted to do something to help the storm victims and formed “The High & Dry Welcoming Committee” to sort out the many donations provided by the community of “Nextdoor Woodlake.”

Donations have been plentiful and are everything one person would need to start up housekeeping for their “new neighbors.”

A feeling of gratification is ever present when these new neighbors walk in and choose shoes, clothes, bedding, towels, glassware, toiletries laundry soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, to include things of every size and description that someone who has lost all of their belongings may need.

The community has been so generous, and Treemont residents are so eager to help their new neighbors, it’s wonderful. The Activity Room (donation center) is filled with laughter and excitement at the prospect of being of service to those who have survived the storm and have lost everything.

Resident Carmen Cleavenger is knitting lap blankets that everyone will pray over so they can have a “prayer blanket.”

A new arrival, shown, is given everything she needs to begin the process of recovery.

Her new apartment will be well stocked with all she needs to set up her new life.

This is a way these folks can help their own, and as resident Felix Meyer said, “We’ll treat them so well, they’ll want to stay forever.”

Treemont management has purchased furnishings to senior flood victims can move quickly to a furnished apartment. If you know someone who needs assistance, have them call Lupe or Linda at Treemont at 713-783-6820.

They will do their best to accommodate a shortterm or long-term stay.
