Texans surprise Kingwood with gear

- Matt Young

The Texans’ D.J. Reader and Nick Martin — as well as some of the team’s cheerleaders — surprised the Kingwood High School football team with some much-needed gear after Tuesday’s practice.

The Texans donated new cleats and footballs to the players, whose area was devastated by Hurricane Harvey. Kingwood High School currently is closed because of the damage, and Kingwood students are attending Summer Creek High School in the afternoons.

The Texans’ visit which came with a lot of autographs and hand shakes was a welcome reprieve for the high school students.

“It’s an exciting moment for them, but once they kind of sit back and reflect a little bit, we’ll talk about how much we appreciate the things that people have given to us and donated to try to help us recover and get these guys back on the field,” Kingwood football coach and athletic coordinator Barry Campbell said. “And to make sure that we don’t take this stuff for granted. In athletics and football, we’re teaching life lessons.”

After practice, both Martin and Reader spoke to the team as a group.

“Y’all are tough. Y’all fight. You play hard for your community, and that’s what we’re trying to do with the Texans. We’re trying to play for our community, just like you play for your community,” Reader said. “That’s what football does, it brings everybody from every walk of life together.”
