Mrs. Mary Elizabeth {Liz} Thornton, 84, passed away September 22, 2017. The viewing is Saturday, 9/30/2017 from 9AM -12PM. Mass: 12PM at St. Mary of The Purificati­on Catholic Church, 3006 Rosedale, Houston, Tx 77004. Burial: October 3, 2017 at Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery.

She was born April 29, 1933 to Roman and Rosita Green in Lafayette Louisiana. She married Leroy Thornton Jr. on January 21, 1953. Their union of 64 years was blessed with three children, John Kervis Reed Thornton, Joseph Craig Thornton, and Ouida Elizabeth Thornton.

Liz graduated from Paul Breaux High School- Lafayette in 1951. She became a member of St. Mary of The Purificati­on Catholic Church in 1959. She was a charter member of the Smiling Ladies. They were well known for their cooking skills. She volunteere­d with St. Mary’s Bazaar and Crawfish Festival. Her other Church activities included the Pastoral Council, St. Mary’s Credit Union Board member, the Altar Guild, St. Vincent DePaul Society, St. Mary’s Seniors In Action, Sisters in The Spirit, and Eucharisti­c Minister.

She was employed with OB GYN Associates for 32 years.

Lady Liz Thornton was a charter member of The Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary 159, and a charter officer. She held many offices and was elevated to the 4th Degree Ladies of Grace after several years of service within the organizati­on. She was a member of The Houston Metro Chapter of The Drexel Society and was past National Vice President.

She leaves to mourn her husband, Leroy Thornton Jr, her three children, Kervis (Robin), Craig, and Ouida, all of Houston; two grandchild­ren, Varah Ellisonne Germaine Thornton and Kervis Reed Thornton II. Her memory is also cherished by two sisters, Catherine Batiste and Margaret Guidry, both of Lafayette Louisiana, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roman and Rosita Boudreaux Green, two sisters – Mathilda Green and Irene T. Green, and five brothers – Gerard Green, Paul Green, Anthony Green, Preston Green, and Nelson Green.

Final arrangemen­ts are entrusted to Bill Claire Mortuary, 2306 Southmore, Houston, Tx 77004.
