Colts’ Luck suffers setback in bid to return
INDIANAPOLIS — Colts quarterback Andrew Luck will not practice this week after developing soreness in his throwing shoulder.
Luck had been throwing every other day the past two weeks. But general manager Chris Ballard said Wednesday that trainers and doctors shut down Luck after he received a cortisone shot.
The three-time Pro Bowler will miss his seventh consecutive game Sunday when Jacksonville (3-3) visits Lucas Oil Stadium.
Luck had surgery in January for a partially torn labrum in his throwing shoulder and didn’t return to the practice field until two weeks ago. But he increased his velocity last week.
Ballard did not say when Luck may return to practice. In other NFL news: • The Cleveland Browns are going back to rookie DeShone Kizer as their starting quarterback against Tennessee on Sunday. The Browns (0-6) demoted an ineffective Kizer last week in favor of Kevin Hogan, but Hogan threw three interceptions in a 33-17 loss to the Texans.
• Quarterback Jameis Winston did not throw in Tampa Bay’s practice Wednesday because of a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder. Backup Ryan Fitzpatrick worked with the firstteam offense in preparation for Sunday’s game against Buffalo.
• Defensive end Cliff Avril is expected to be placed on injured reserve by the Seattle Seahawks as he continues to deal with a neck injury. Avril was injured three weeks ago in a game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Avril, in his 10th season in the NFL, made his first Pro Bowl last season after compiling 11½ sacks.
