HAIL THE QUEEN
PEARLAND — It was homecoming queen last week and hero this week for Dawson kicker Claire Jeffress.
She knocked through a 30-yarder with 1:08 left in the game to help the Eagles beat rival Pearland 38-35 on Friday night at The Rig.
The young rivalry already has its fair share of great moments, and this will be one of them.
Dawson especially will love this win because it keeps the Eagles in the hunt for a District 23-6A title.
West makes its case as best in Magnolia
The Magnolia Bowl is always a special event in northwest Houston.
Magnolia West owns the bragging rights for this year.
The Mustangs won this one, 41-25. They had to stave off a Magnolia comeback, though. The Bulldogs rode a 22-0 run in the fourth quarter to make it a 28-25 deficit with eight minutes remaining.
But Peyton Martinez’s late interception sandwiched between two rushing touchdowns from Magnolia West’s Preston Deming sealed the win. Quarterback John Matocha also turned in two scoring runs for Magnolia West.
North Forest makes it 3 straight shutouts
North Forest topped Yates 40-0 in a meeting of undefeated District 11-4A Division I teams.
It’s the third straight shutout for the Bulldogs, too, after a 55-0 victory over Scarborough and 42-0 win over Washington.
The path is clear for this team to finish the regular season undefeated, and if that happens, North Forest will have its fourth district title in six seasons.
Baytown Sterling stays alive in playoff race
Baytown Sterling beat C.E. King 26-13 to stay in the playoff hunt in District 21-6A.
The win spoils homecoming for the Panthers, who have dealt with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey more than most schools. The team’s facility and the high school suffered heavy flooding, and many of the players are displaced because of the storms.
Ridge Point standout commits to Michigan
Ridge Point tight end Mustapha Muhammad missed Friday’s game against Dulles with a toe turf injury, but there was still some good news to come out of the night.
The 6-5, 235-pounder verbally committed to Michigan before the game amongst friends and family. He’ll give Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh yet another weapon to use in an offense that’s not shy on letting the tight end loose.
Ridge Point did fine without him in a 45-3 win.
District 17-6A clash sees offensive outburst
Seventeen offensive touchdowns, 20 total touchdowns, a combined 137 points and 1,301 yards — sounds like a classic District 17-6A shootout.
Cypress Springs won this one over Jersey Village, 74-63, on Thursday.
Jersey Village quarterback Blake Johnson was 21-of-30 for 222 yards and four touchdowns with an interception. Cypress Springs had two 200-yard rushers in Taye Barber (13 carries, 246 yards, three touchdowns) and Jah’marea Sheread (13-276-3).
Lamar, Heights meet for 18-6A showdown
Will anyone ever knock Lamar off its perch in District 18-6A? It’s a valid question after 51 straight district wins for the Texans.
It’s Heights’ turn Saturday in a key game for both teams at Delmar Stadium.
Anyone who is into recruiting will love this game, too. Heights’ cornerback Jalen Green has played some quarterback this season. He’s committed to Texas.
Texas also has commitments from Lamar defensive back D’shawn Jamison and Lamar receiver Al’Vonte Woodard.
And arguably the state’s top recruit — Anthony Cook — lives in Lamar’s secondary, too.
