HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Boys
Nery Enriquez, El Campo
Notable: The 5-9, 205-pound fullback carried 27 times for 220 yards and five touchdowns in the Ricebirds’ 49-46 win over Sealy. The senior also hit his first field goal of the season, a 27-yarder at the end of the first half, and converted two extra points and a 2-point run.
What coach Wayne Condra said: “He’s put a lot of hard work into football, and this week was no different than any other week. He’s a big part of our offense.”
Other nominees
Nelson Ceaser, Ridge Point: The 6-4, 213-pound junior defensive lineman had eight tackles, two forced fumbles, two sacks and one interception in a 45-3 win over Dulles in District 20-6A play.
Worthington Moore, Atascocita: The senior ran away with the Region III-6A cross country crown, finishing the 5K course in 16 minutes, 1.6 seconds – 10.6 seconds faster than the second-place finisher – at Kate Barr Ross Park in Huntsville.
Darrius Smith, Dawson: The senior running back had 34 rushes for 278 yards and three TDs in a 38-35 win over Pearland.
Girls
Meredith Clayton, Brenham
Notable: The senior won the Class 5A Region III cross country championships with a time of 19 minutes and 11.1 seconds.
What coach Trenton Hall said: “She was third her sophomore year and fourth her junior year. This year, she’s had a lot of good performances but at district, she wasn’t feeling very well and she was actually 10th place. She refocused, bounced back and just took control of the race early on.”
Other nominees
Heidi Nielson, Cinco Ranch: The freshman added to her District 19-6A title with an 18:44.9 for gold at the Class 6A Region III cross country championships.
Christina SanchoSpore, Tomball Memorial: She finished second at the Class 5A Region III cross country championships with a state-qualifying time of 19:14.3.
Audrey Tuttle, George Ranch: Tuttle had a season-high 22 kills as well as four blocks and 18 digs in a sweep of Pearland. She followed with 21 digs and 10 kills, hitting .600, against Elsik.
