Meyerland flooding

-

All affected

Regarding “Losing the faith” (Page A16, Thursday), having grown up in the Houston Jewish community, I am sick at the longstanding inaction by lawmakers on infrastructure and flood control in Meyerland.

U.S. Rep. John Culberson, state Sen. Joan Huffman and others should have been fighting for this area long before now.

Holding temporary services at Lakewood Church doesn’t come close to fixing a systemic problem that needs attention immediately. This will be one of my top voting issues for local, state and federal elections. Norri Leder, Bellaire

Awakening?

We have watched our Jewish friends faithfully rebuild flood after flood and hoped that government officials would see the damage and take steps. We’ve written our legislators about them. Instead, our leaders waste time on frivolous legislation that helps no one while harming powerless children.

What Harvey should have shown the city is that flood control (or lack thereof ) affects Republicans and Democrats no matter what religion they follow as overbuilding has widened the flood plain.

We are not the only city facing flooding issues, but if we fail to look to the common good and improve our flood control, Houston could lose massive population and industry. More than Jews will be in the diaspora. Paula Ruth, Houston
