LEG UP ON RIVAL

- Adam Coleman

Deer Park got its first win over rival La Porte since 2013 after a 16-14 triumph Friday night thanks to Cameron Garner’s game-winning 38-yard field goal.

Deer Park trailed 14-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

No doubt it’s sweet for the Deer in more ways than one. La Porte and Deer Park have played each other since 1941, with La Porte holding a 35-28-1 edge in the series.

Deer Park improved to 5-0 in District 22-6A.

Klein Collins breezes to victory, 7-0 record

Klein Collins’ 49-7 win over Stratford has the Tigers at 7-0 and emerging as a trendy pick to win Region II-6A, let alone District 15-6A.

Isaiah Spiller had 23 carries for 187 yards and four touchdowns against Stratford. Josh Powell added 20 rushes for 136 yards and one score, and the Tigers’ defense held the Spartans to just 149 yards of total offense.

It was a ho-hum day for one of the Houston area’s best teams.

Surprising Brazosport keeps turning heads

Brazosport was a combined 4-26 in the last three seasons.

This year? The Exporters are a surprising 6-2 under new head coach Mike Ferrell.

Brazosport’s latest triumph was Friday night’s 28-22 win over Bay City.

A pair of scores in the third quarter, including Jarvis Davis’ 40-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Johnson, helped Brazosport create some distance. Bay City mounted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough.

It’s been a dream season for Brazosport. Along with Tomball and Hastings, the Exporters have a great case for the best turnaround in the Houston area.

Humble ISD receives $50,000 donation

Dick’s Sporting Goods donated $65,000 to Humble ISD during Friday’s Summer Creek-Kingwood game at Turner Stadium.

This donation was made in light of Hurricane Harvey’s destruction to Kingwood High School, which had to have its student body share a campus with students at Summer Creek.

Summer Creek won the game 34-7 and clinched a playoff spot.

Waltrip, North Forest inch toward titles

A pair of Houston ISD Class 5A teams stayed on a roll Thursday night.

Waltrip’s 56-6 win over Northside has the Rams in full control of District 24-5A at 7-0. Waltrip has a ninth consecutive playoff appearance coming up, but an outright district title would be the Rams’ first since 1990.

North Forest moved to 6-0 after a 32-20 victory over Kashmere, moving the Bulldogs closer to winning the District 11-4A Division I title. It would be their fourth in six years.

Bush-Travis clash has implications for 20-6A

At 5-0, Bush is having one of the better seasons in Houston’s Class 6A and has a chance to win District 20-6A.

Next up for the Broncos is Saturday’s date against high-scoring Travis. Travis’ only district loss is to Ridge Point.

The Tigers can immediately jump back in the district title race with a win Saturday. A victory by Bush sets up another monumental game against Ridge Point next week.
