Despite unprecedented rookie pace, Watson not satisfied

- Aaron Wilson

The collaboration between Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson and coach Bill O’Brien has spawned unprecedented productivity for the franchise.

Watson ranks first in the NFL with 21 total touchdowns, and he’s tied with Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz with 19 touchdown passes. He has the most passing touchdowns by anyone in NFL history through their first seven career games.

During Sunday’s 41-38 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Watson became the only player in NFL history to pass for 400 or more yards, four or more touchdowns and rush for 50 or more yards in a single game.

Watson threw 16 touchdown passes in October, the most by a rookie in a calendar month in NFL history since Dan Marino’s 11 in October of 1983.

“He’s doing a great job,” O’Brien said. “He’s putting up the points, leading the NFL. I feel like he’s doing everything he needs to do. It’s always good to have that relationship between the quarterback and not just the head coach, but the guy that’s calling the plays.”

Watson and O’Brien, with input from quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan and other staffers, have helped transform the Texans into the top-ranked scoring offense in the NFL. They’re averaging 30.7 points per game and rank 10th in yards per game, third in rushing offense and 16th in passing offense.

But the first-round draft pick from Clemson isn’t resting on his laurels or patting himself on the back. He wants to keep improving.

“There’s always things,” Watson said. “I’m not satisfied with any kind of point with my game, but decision-making, pocket presence and accuracy are the key things that you always want to improve on as a quarterback and just operating the whole offense.”

Player’s costume not a dig at owner

Jadeveon Clowney was amused at the reaction to him swearing an orange jumpsuit for a players’ Halloween party.

Clowney said his costume wasn’t intended as a dig at Texans owner Bob McNair following his “we can’t have the inmates running the prison” remarks at a recent NFL owners meeting that deeply offended several of his players.

“Nah, man,” Clowney said when asked if the costume was a joke directed McNair’s way. “It was just something to wear to a Halloween party. It was the only thing they had in my size.”

Clowney said he considered whether he should wear the costume, but ultimately decided to go ahead.

“I thought about it, but then everybody was like, ‘It’s last minute, you might as well throw it on and come on,’ ” Clowney said. “I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m on my way.’ Went out there with teammates and had a good time. Everybody was just laughing. It was part of my costume, pretty cool.”
