EYES ON TIGERS
Klein Collins just keeps winning.
A season after winning 13 games, the Tigers are 8-0 with an eye on much more than a district title.
They defeated rival Klein in a 22-9 win Friday. Just one point separates this team from looking at back-to-back undefeated regular seasons. It lost to Katy in double overtime early last year.
Klein Collins is doing it with defense. The Tigers kept Klein out of the end zone until the nine-minute mark in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile on offense, quarterback Carter Rhyne has been a revelation, as has running back Isaiah Spiller.
Kingwood stays in playoff hunt
What a win for Kingwood. The Mustangs trailed 24-17 to Baytown Sterling before Matt Slayton scored three rushing touchdowns and completed a pass for a two-point conversion for 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and a 39-24 win over the Rangers.
With everything Kingwood has been through with Hurricane Harvey, the Mustangs are in the playoff hunt in District 21-6A.
George Ranch zeroes in on postseason
One of the underrated results from Thursday’s action was George Ranch’s 28-27 comeback win over Elsik. Christian Jackson had a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a 13-yard touchdown run with 2:30 left in the game to push the Longhorns past the Rams.
George Ranch has won three straight and is zeroed in on a playoff spot with Alief Taylor on tap in the regular-season finale. The program’s meteoric rise is mostly associated with the Class 5A Division I state championship triumph in 2015. Things haven’t been as easy since the move up to Class 6A in 2016, but a fifth consecutive playoff berth since the program’s inception in 2012 is nothing to scoff at.
Wild Saturday on tap for District 17-6A
It’s always whacky in District 17-6A. Saturday will be interesting when Cy-Fair meets rival Cypress Falls in a game that definitely has playoff implications.
Cy-Fair wants to stay undefeated to set up a mammoth showdown next week with Langham Creek, which plays Jersey Village on Saturday. Cypress Falls is in a race for fourth with Cypress Woods and Cypress Creek. Cypress Falls and Cypress Creek meet next week.
Now it’s easy to get caught up in bracket projections. Cy-Fair could drop to the Class 6A Region III Division II bracket if Cypress Falls finishes fourth. Langham Creek’s enrollment has the Lobos destined for the Division II bracket no matter what.
But imagine Langham Creek and Cy-Fair playing for the district title only to meet again in the playoffs. It’s possible.
Parade gives fan a chance to double dip
High school football fans in Houston ISD had a chance to double-dip Friday.
The district announced Thursday its schools would be closed Friday for the Astros’ World Series parade.
HISD cited traffic concerns as one the reasons for the closure, but it gave students and employees a chance to celebrate.
