HOUSTON CINEMA ARTS FESTIVAL
More than 30 films will screen at this year’s Cinema Arts Festival. Chances are, you can’t see them all. Here are a few highlights you might want to make time for.
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Playwright and filmmaker Martin McDonagh (“In Bruges”) directs and Frances McDormand stars as a woman who takes unorthodox steps to get local law enforcement to solve her daughter’s murder. 7 p.m. Friday, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
“Bomb City”
It’s kind of like the greaser/soc thing from “The Outsiders.” A punk and some jocks run afoul of one another in Amarillo to a tragic end. Jameson Brooks directs based on a true story. 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
“A Life in Waves”
Brett Whitcomb’s documentary tells the story of electronic-music legend Suzanne Ciani, whose work spans TV commercials and the birth of New Age music. 1 p.m. Sunday, Rice Media Center
“I, Tonya”
Margot Robbie plays the notorious figure skater Tonya Harding in Craig Gillespie’s dark comedy. 7 p.m. Monday, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
“Columbus”
Director/writer Kogonada’s delicate story of a flickering romance between the prodigal son of a prominent modernist architect (John Cho), returning home after his father falls ill, and a much younger, self-taught student of architecture. 7 p.m. Monday, Rice Media Center
“Call Me By Your Name”
In the summer of 1983, a 17-year-old boy is introduced to a doctoral student (Armie Hammer) and the hypnotic pull of desire. 7 p.m. Saturday, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
