Washington St. slices TSU’s lead to prevail in OT

PULLMAN, Wash. — Robert Franks had 25 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out in regulation, Malachi Flynn added 19 points, and Washington State beat Texas Southern 86-84 in overtime Sunday.

TSU led by as many as 22 points in the first half and had an 18-point lead at halftime.

Washington State (1-0) establishe­d the lead early in overtime with a 3-pointer from Flynn.

Donte Clark had 22 points and 14 rebounds for TSU (0-2), which lost to No. 18 Gonzaga on Friday and is in the midst of a 13-game road trip. Demontrae Jefferson added 22 points and Kevin Scott 19. Also for the Tigers, 7-2 Trayvon Reed grabbed 15 rebounds.

TSU had the lead for 35 minutes of the game. The Tigers shot 62.5 percent in the first half, including 58.3 percent from 3-point range. But in the second half, the Tigers shot 37.9 percent.

KENTUCKY 73, VERMONT 69

The No. 5 Wildcats, playing their second game in three days to open the season, missed seven of their last eight field goals but managed to hold off a late surge by the visiting Catamounts.

Trailing 72-69, Vermont missed two 3-pointers in the final 30 seconds. P.J. Washington, who led Kentucky with 16 points, made one of two free throws with a second left for the final margin.

SMU 83, LA.-MONROE 65

Shake Milton scored 24 points and Ethan Chargois added 23 points and had nine rebounds as the Mustangs (2-0) pulled away from the visiting Warhawks.

Allonzo Trier scored 30 points and the No. 3 Wildcats overpowere­d Maryland-Baltimore County in Tucson, Ariz.

MIAMI 89, NAVY 55

The No. 13 Hurricanes opened the game with a 9-0 run and wore down the visiting Midshipmen in transition with 29 points off fast-break opportunit­ies.

LOUISVILLE 72 GEORGE MASON 61

Deng Adel had 20 points, and freshmen Darius Perry and Jordan Nwora combined to score 22 in the second half to rally the No. 16 Cardinals past the visiting Patriots to win David Padgett’s debut as Louisville’s interim coach in the wake of Rick Pitino’s firing last month.
