Dreamers

-

Regarding “Why I support a legal pathway for ‘Dreamers’ (Page A35, Nov. 5), Police Chief Art Acevedo should know that the government operates under the rule of law. The Constitution has made that abundantly clear.

The chief and dreamy idealists are having a problem with President Trump’s decision to affirm the rule of law and to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. They can voice vociferous opposition all they want, but the fact remains, ‘Dreamers’ are in the U.S. as residents residing in the country illegally. We have no obligation regardless of the circumstances as to how they got here, their ages or their financial conditions.

Compromising on law enforcement only perpetuates the problem and laying the blame squarely on President Trump and our U.S. immigration policy for DACA’s demise is absurd. Acevedo should let policy makers deal with Dreamers. He should carry out his law enforcement responsibilities by arresting all criminal violators. Mike Gonzales, Houston
