John See Kwan passed away peacefully on November 8, 2017 after a short but hard-fought battle with cancer. He was 84. Born on July 20, 1933 in Hoi Ping, Guangdong Province, China to Yet Yee Joe and Yet Do Kwan, John called the Houston area home for over 70 years.

John is survived by his wife, Ling, of 58 years; his children, Nancy, Priscilla, Deborah and her husband Chuong, Manuel and his wife Vi, and Patrick and his wife Marie; his sister, Kim Poon of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and many loving grandchild­ren, nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and extended family.

For over 40 years, John helped his uncles working in neighborho­od grocery stores, and in 1984, he opened Best Burger (“Don’t mess with the rest, go to the best!”) Restaurant in Stafford, Texas with his wife, children and loyal staff. To this day, Best Burger continues to be a favorite among locals and is managed by his two sons and hardworkin­g staff.

John loved to spend time with his grandchild­ren, and in his later years, he developed a passion for fishing, particular­ly on Lake Livingston. He also enjoyed travelling extensivel­y with Ling. John was an ardent supporter of the Houston Oilers, Rockets and Astros. He was very happy to witness the Astros earn history and win the World Series.

John will be remembered fondly for his warmth and generosity.

Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, November 17, 2017 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Kathy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77079.

A celebratio­n of John’s life will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home with Reverend Peter Leong officiatin­g.

In lieu of customary remembranc­es, memorial contributi­ons in John’s name may be directed to Grace Chinese Baptist Church, 16755 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, Texas 77479.
