Restaurant to host Texas absinthe party

- By Greg Morago greg.morago@chron.com

Derelict Airship Distillery in Bastrop has created the first Texasmade absinthe — the anise-flavored hooch historically referred to as the “green fairy” — bottled under the name Violet Crown Spirits Emerald Absinthe. The potent spirit (Derelict’s is 140 proof ) has been the subject of great lore during its peak of popularity in late-19thand early-20th-century France, where it was widely portrayed as a hallucinogen.

Not sure what it tastes like or how to drink it? Downtown French restaurant Brasserie du Parc, 1440 Lamar, is hosting a party Friday with the makers of Emerald Absinthe. There will be cocktails created by beverage manager Kim Paul and savory bites from chef de cuisine Romain Mauger; representatives from the distillery will be on hand to share their absinthe knowledge. Admission is $40 at the door; the party is scheduled from 7 to 11 p.m.

The Eventbrite invitation says feel free to don your Paris finery to party like it’s 1899. And if anyone feels like strapping on a pair of fairy wings, so much the better.
