Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol — Dec. 1-2
On Friday, Dec. 1, at 8 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 2, at 3 p.m., The Grand 1894 Opera House presents Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
A timeless tale of hope and redemption, A Christmas Carol has enchanted audiences around the world since it was first published in 1843. The miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, his overworked-underpaid clerk Bob Cratchit, the angelic Tiny Tim, and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future come together in a highly entertaining theatrical performance. Dickens’ ever-popular classic fills the stage with veteran Broadway actors, lush costumes, stunning sets, and plenty of music and dance.
An Evening with Lyle Lovett and his Band — Dec. 4
Singer, songwriter, four-time Grammy-Award winner, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett returns for a one-night performance on Monday, Dec. 4, at 7:30 p.m.
Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with his gift of storytelling, this popular Texas native fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues.
Accompanied by his band — which is comprised of several members of his Large Band — audiences can look forward to an intimate evening at The Grand, where this award-winning entertainer is sure to make this “Evening with Lyle Lovett and his Band” one to remember.
The Nutcracker — Dec. 9-10
City Ballet of Houston’s presentation of The Nutcracker returns to The Grand on Saturday, Dec. 9 with performances at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and a Sunday matinee on Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $28 per adult; $24 per child.
The Nutcracker tells a story of a young girl who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince, a Sugar Plum Fairy and a fierce battle against a Mouse King. Following the two afternoon performances, audiences are encouraged to also experience the “behindthe-scenes magic” of The Nutcracker. Look forward to hearing a brief presentation about the ballet and having the opportunity to meet City Ballet of Houston’s dancers.
This special presentation is included with the ticket to either the Saturday or Sunday matinee performance.
In addition to attending one of three performances of The Nutcracker, families can look forward to the opportunity to attend “The Nutcracker Afternoon Tea.” This popular and festive annual tradition will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 12:30 p.m. at The Grand. Tickets for the Tea are $30 per adult; $25 per child.
The Texas Tenors — Dec. 15
On Friday, Dec. 15, at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., The Grand presents The Texas Tenors in “Deep in the Heart of Christmas.”
The Grand welcomes The Texas Tenors back to Galveston following last year’s triumphant PBS special, which was filmed at The Grand and aired in summer 2017. Surrounded on stage by a Christmas wonderland, Texas favorites Marcus Collins, John Hagen, and JC Fisher will delight the audience with their smooth vocals, tight harmonies, soaring melodies, and a mixture of contemporary and traditional Christmas favorites.
Jerry Jeff Walker — Dec. 16
OnSaturday, Dec. 16, at 8 p.m., The Grand 1894 OperaHouse presents Jerry Jeff Walker. One of the Lone Star State’s most popular musical ambassadors, Walker returns to The Grand. He has been called “Mister Bojangles,” “The Gypsy Songman” and “The Jimmy Buffett of Texas.” Praised for his unpretentious poetic sensibility and restrained, but endearing singing style, Walker is a gifted storyteller with a “say what you mean, sing what you say” delivery. His annual return to The Grand will include a special combination of spirited melodies, heart-tugging ballads and down-home fun.
Sophia Loren — Rescheduled — April 8
The Grand 1894 Opera House has announced that the Nov. 12 performance of “An Evening with Sophia Loren” has been rescheduled for Sunday, April 8, 2018 at 4 p.m.
The rescheduling of Loren’s performance was necessary because her Galveston performance was part of her touring schedule that included performances in theaters on the East Coast. Those theatres were damaged by Hurricane Irma.
