Parkway Place residents give thanks, share joy

-

For Houston, this holiday season brings more than usual for which to give thanks. As the city enters a season of family, friends and thanksgiving, many are reflecting on a year that has gone from the highs of the Super Bowl to the lows of Hurricane Harvey. It’s times like these that make gratitude — and kindness — even more important.

Gratitude brings joy to both the giver and the receiver. As the adage goes, “Live from a place of abundance, not of scarcity.”

Residents at Parkway Place, a Buckner senior living community in the heart of Houston’s Energy Corridor, experience this joy every day as they share their lives with one another.

With a quick glance around the beauti- fully landscaped 15-acre community, you’ll find residents together sharing laughs over a game of Bridge in the card room, taking a leisurely walk along the community’s shaded walking path, learning new exercises in the state-of-the-art wellness center or even helping carry a tune on the grand piano.

Residents actively engage with one another to find meaning and purpose in their lives.

As Joan Haggard, who moved to Parkway Place as a direct result of Hurricane Harvey, said when she walked into the community, “I felt like I was family, like I was right where I belonged.”

In fact, the faith-based nonprofit community welcomed several new residents who were displaced during the storm. But while the events Houston has seen in the last three months are out of the ordinary, the Parkway Place spirit of thanksgiving is not.

As a Life Plan Community, Parkway Place also offers a full continuum of living and care on site, including assisted living, memory care, skilled and long-term nursing, and rehab services.

In each of these areas, staff encourage residents to engage with one another through opportunities such as music therapy, Bible study and wellness initiatives.
