Boys
Erick Hallett, Cy-Fair
Notable: The 6-0, 180-pound senior cornerback returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown and a fumble recovery 20 yards for a score, and he added three tackles and one pass breakup in a 49-14 win over Westside in the Class 6A Division II bi-district playoffs.
What coach Ed Pustejovsky said: “…Any time you can get a turnover and score, whether it is a pick or a scoop-and-score, that changes the momentum of the game, and both of them were very big (Friday).”
Other nominees
Dematrius Davis, North Shore: The freshman quarterback went 9 for 9 passing for 241 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half, in a 48-7 win over Deer Park in his first varsity start in the 6A Division I bi-district playoffs.
C.J. Washington, Tompkins: The senior guard/forward scored 19 points and was named tournament MVP after leading the Eagles to the Division I gold bracket championship at the McDonald’s Texas Invitational in a 59-54 win over Duncanville.
Craig Williams, Crosby: The senior running back and Baylor pledge supplied nearly 400 total yards in a 72-69 loss to Port Neches-Groves in the Class 5A Division II bi-district playoffs, carrying 33 times for 353 yards and four touchdowns and adding three receptions for 45 yards. Jason McDaniel
Girls
Ally Batenhorst, Seven Lakes
Notable: The freshman had a match-high 29 kills in the Class 6A state semifinal win against Northside O’Connor and followed with a team-high 18 kills in the state championship loss to Lewisville Hebron.
What coach Amy Cataline said: “They did something no one else has been able to do in the last 12 years the school has been open. They’ve started the beginning of a legacy, and they’re leaving a big mark.”
Other nominees
Madison Lussier, Clear Falls: She reached double figures in three of four games last week – 13 points against Pearland, 10 against Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial and 13 (with 10 rebounds) against South Houston.
Dyani Robinson, Langham Creek: The junior averaged 17 points in wins over Stratford, Elsik, Bush and Travis. She scored 24 against Travis.
Sophie Walls, The Woodlands: She had 20 digs in a Class 6A state semifinal loss to Lewisville Hebron.
