Man charged with shooting at police while fleeing

-

A Houston man has been charged with attempted capital murder for allegedly shooting in the direction of at least one Huntsville police officer while fleeing from authorities early this morning.

Brandon Duane McDaniel, 21, was apprehended inside an apartment in the 2500 block of Pine Shadows Drive. He was booked into the Walker County Jail on the first-degree felony charge, but no bond has been set.

Lt. Curt Landrum said a Huntsville Police officer was conducting a traffic stop in the 1700 block of Normal Park at approximately 2:50 a.m. when he heard multiple gunshots in the distance.

The officer, who called dispatch for assistance, saw a vehicle speeding south on Normal Park and tried to pull it over. The driver, who was later identified as McDaniel, lost control and crashed the vehicle into an embankment outside the apartments.

Authorities say the suspect shot at another officer during the pursuit in the parking lot. The gun was eventually located inside the apartment unit after the renter gave police consent to search the residence.

McDaniel has also been charged with evading arrest and could be charged with deadly conduct for firing a gun in the city limits, according to Landrum. Court records show that he has a case pending in Harris County for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and was out on $45,000 bond.

One man was shot in the head in a Wednesday night drive-by outside a Third Ward convenience store, according to police.
