SMU stuns Arizona; UT to face No. 1 Duke

Mustangs edge No. 2 Wildcats; Longhorns beat Butler, reach 4-0

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas — Ben Emelogu scored 20 points and SMU upset No. 2 Arizona 66-60 in Thursday night’s consolatio­n round at the Battle 4 Atlantis, handing the Wildcats their second consecutiv­e loss to an unranked opponent.

The Mustangs (5-1) blew an 11-point lead in the second half but responded with a 10-2 run to go ahead for good. SMU won despite shooting 31 percent, though the Mustangs scored 19 points off 20 Arizona turnovers.

Shake Milton added 14 points, including four free throws in the final 70 seconds to help keep SMU in control.

And for the second straight night, the Wildcats (3-2) found themselves on the wrong side of a stunning defeat.

Arizona lost 90-84 to North Carolina State in Wednesday’s first round. This time, the Wildcats had a tougher time generating offense.

Allonzo Trier scored 22 points to lead the Wildcats, who shot 47 percent. But SMU nearly doubled Arizona’s output on the offensive glass (20-11) and finished with 23 more shot attempts, leading to 14 second-chance points.

TEXAS 61, BUTLER 48

Andrew Jones had 16 points as the Longhorns held off the Bulldogs down the stretch for a victory at the Phil Knight Invitation­al tournament in Portland, Ore.

Mohamed Bamba had six points and 12 rebounds along with four blocked shots, as Texas opened the season 4-0 in coach Shaka Smart’s third year.

UT goes on to play topranked Duke on Friday.

Kamar Baldwin had 15 points to lead Butler (3-2), which trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half but rallied to come within three points late.

The tournament involves 16 teams playing in two brackets Thanksgivi­ng, Friday and Sunday, with a break Saturday.

The field includes No. 4 Michigan State, No. 7 Florida and defending NCAA Tournament champion North Carolina.

Dubbed the PK80, the tournament celebrates Nike co-founder Phil Knight’s 80th birthday.

DUKE 99, PORTLAND ST. 81

Trevon Duval had 22 points and the top-ranked Blue Devils pulled away for a victory over the surprising­ly tenacious Vikings to open the Phil Knight Invitation­al tournament in Portland, Ore.

Marvin Bagley III added 18 points, and Grayson Allen had 14 points and nine assists for Duke (6-0).

Duke trailed by as many as eight points but took control midway through the second half when Wendell Carter Jr.’s dunk put the Blue Devils in front 67-62. They would go on to lead by as many as 21 points.

It was coach Mike Krzyzewski’s 200th victory as coach of a No. 1-ranked team. He’s 20029 when the Blue Devils are atop the poll.

NORTH CAROLINA 102 PORTLAND 78

Luke Maye scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Joel Berry II added 18 points, and the No. 9 Tar Heels had five players in double figures in overwhelmi­ng the Pilots to open the PK80 Invitation­al in Portland, Ore.

Kenny Williams added 17 points and Theo Pinson had 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for North Carolina (4-0), who have scored at least 90 points in the past three games.

VILLANOVA 85 TENNESSEE 76

Jalen Brunson scored 25 points to help the fifthranke­d Wildcats rally from 15 down and beat the Volunteers in the Battle 4 Atlantis semifinals at Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Villanova (5-0) trailed 44-29 with 1:39 left before roaring out of a break with a dominating run. Villanova scored the first 11 points as part of that 23-2 burst, with the Wildcats playing far more aggressive­ly and getting out in transition.

WESTERN KENTUCKY 77 PURDUE 73

Darius Thompson scored 12 points and hit two clinching free throws with 5.1 seconds left to help the Hilltopper­s upset the No. 18 Boilermake­rs in the consolatio­n round of the Battle 4 Atlantis at Paradise Island, Bahamas.

RHODE ISLAND 75 SETON HALL 74

Jared Terrell made a running layup with 5.2 seconds left to give the Rams an upset victory over the No. 20 Pirates in the second game of the Preseason NIT at New York.

Terrell finished with 32 points to help Rhode Island improve to 3-1.

WEST VIRGINIA 84 MARIST 78

Jevon Carter had 20 points, Sagaba Konate added 14, and the No. 23 Mountainee­rs survived an upset bid by the winless Red Foxes, beating Marist in the opening round of at the Advocare Invitation­al at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

COL. OF CHARLESTON 59 SAM HOUSTON ST. 49

Marquise Pointer scored 12 points, including a go-ahead jumper, Nick Harris scored 11 with eight rebounds, and the Cougars beat the Bearkats to win in the consolatio­n semifinals of the 2017 GCI Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage.

Chris Galbreath Jr. led Sam Houston State (2-3) with 11 points.
