CYCLING
Get Around H-Town, one of BikeHouston’s community education programs, will teach middle-school kids about safety and bicycle maintenance so they can ride with skill and confidence. To kick off the program, the organization needs volunteer teachers; a safe storage site for a 7 by 12-foot trailer to hold the program bicycles; individuals with carpentry and intermediate to advanced bike repair skills; and individuals who can help transport the trailer and bikes to after-school sites. Let’s Do This Houston’s themed Future Vibe & Ride Day begins at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Third Ward Tours, 2301 Elgin, for a cruise around the city vibing to the music of hip-hop rap artist Future and a stop at Around the Corner for brunch. Visit LetsdothisHouston on Facebook.
GOLF
The First Tee of Greater Houston , a nonprofit whose mission is to teach children core values, wellness and life skills through the game of golf, was recognized with several awards at the annual meeting of The First Tee Network. The local chapter took home the following national awards: Chapter Volunteer Engagement for leading the way using innovative techniques to recruit, reward and retain volunteers; Outreach Impact for creative partnerships and collaborative relationships with school districts and the local community; and the McGlothlin Award for significantly impacting the community for the better through their fulfillment of the First Tee mission. Members receiving individual accolades were Doug Earle, executive director, Brian Ladet, program director, and coaches Betsy Harris and Patrick Kisomanga for their commitment and leadership.

RUNNING
Glenwood Cemetery Walking Tour from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday visits the historic cemetery on Buffalo Bayou. Some of Houston’s most famous citizens, including philanthropist George Hermann; Texas governor and Humble Oil co-founder Ross Sterling, oil wildcatter Glenn McCarthy, movie star Gene Tierney and Howard Hughes are buried there. Fleet Feet Sports HMSA Classical 25K, HMSA Classical 10 Miler and Texas Tamale Company 5K Fun Run on Sunday morning begin at Prairie Avenue and Bagby Street and finish on Texas Avenue in front of the Wortham Center. Organizers Houston Masters Sports Association will donate a portion of the race proceeds to multiple causes, including Cenikor, Avondale House, Impact a Hero and Madison High School Track & Field. TENNIS
Ross Persons, Houston Racquet Club teaching pro, won the 60 and over doubles with Australian Glenn Busby in the individual competition at the International Tennis Federation Seniors World Championships in Florida. Persons, who holds world rankings of No. 1 in men’s 60 doubles and No. 8 in 60 singles, reached the quarterfinals of the singles event.
Lee LeClear Tennis Center Lucky
Acers were declared 40 & Over Mixed 8.0 USTA National Co-Champions in Mobile, Ala. They shared the title with a Maryland team when extensive rain ended the tournament. The Houston team was captained by Thy Regent and featured players Daniel Young, Elizabeth Emerson, Emma Nguyen, Kristian Huynh, Michael Martinez, Monica Ramirez, Olivia Wan, Phong Regent, Stacy Tea and Tomas Huynh.
