Protect computer by doubling down
Q: What do you recommend for anti-virus programs for a computer running Windows 10? I want to get away from McAfee. I have a friend who says he uses only Malwarebytes. Is that adequate?
A: Malwarebytes is a fantastic anti-malware program. But it is not a dedicated full-time antivirus program.
I know it can be confusing, but when it comes to malicious software, I have found it prudent to install a good anti-malware program along with a good anti-virus program. This is due to the fact that no single application I have found seems to be able to detect, block or remove all the bad software out there.
Malwarebytes is one of my favorites, and I recommend it heartily.
As to anti-virus software, if you are looking to get away from the more bloated and cumbersome anti-virus applications like Symantec or Norton, I recommend simply using Windows Defender, which is built into Windows 10 and seems to do a good job of protecting a PC from viruses.
If you want a thirdparty anti-virus application, I recommend AVG Free from free.avg.com. It goes easy on your system resources, and it does a good job.
No anti-virus or antimalware program will protect you from yourself. Be careful about what you click, download or install.
Q: I am using Windows 10 with a password to start my computer in the normal way. I also have a different password to enter the Microsoft account when needed. At this point, I want to delete password entry to this computer. I have only one account, and I am the computer administrator. How do I delete this password requirement?
A: Although I don’t recommend bypassing the login screen, I understand that some people don’t want to be bothered typing in a password to start a computer.
To disable the password requirement on Windows 10, press the Windows key, type netplwiz, and hit Enter.
When the User Accounts window pops up, select your user name and uncheck the box next to Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer. When prompted, put in your password, click OK and reboot.
Now when the computer starts up, you will be taken directly to your desktop.
