Arizona topples No. 7 Texas A&M

PHOENIX — Deandre Ayton had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Arizona held on to beat No. 7 Texas A&M 67-64 on Tuesday night.

Arizona (6-3) picked up a big win against UNLV on Saturday and notched an even bigger one in front of a pro-Wildcats crowd that made Talking Stick Arena feel like McKale Center west. It wasn’t easy. Texas A&M (7-1) pulled within 63-62 on Tyler Davis’ jump-hook with 17 seconds left. Brandon Randolph twice hit one of two free throws, sandwiched around a travel by Davis, and Duane Wilson was fouled on a 3-point attempt with two seconds left. He made two after missing the first attempt, and Dylan Smith made two at the other end to put Arizona up 67-64.

Texas A&M’s Robert Williams missed badly on a long 3-pointer to send the Wildcats rushing off the bench and the Aggies to their first defeat.

Davis led the Aggies with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

TCU 94, SMU 83

Kenrich Williams had 27 points to lead five players in double figures, and got tackled after a steal and breakaway toward the basket as the 20thranked Horned Frogs extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 14 games with a victory over the Mustangs in Fort Worth.

TCU (9-0) was already starting to separate itself midway through the second half when Williams came up with an SMU turnover. The 6-7 guard was going the other way when Ben Emelogu caught up from behind and essentiall­y dragged him to the court.

After the flagrant foul, Williams made one free throw, and TCU kept possession. After several passes, Desmond Bane hit a 3-pointer from the left wing in front of the Frogs’ bench that put them up 67-56 over SMU (7-3).

TEXAS TECH 82, NEVADA 76

Keenan Evans scored 25 of his career-high 32 points in the second half and overtime, and the Red Raiders rallied from 11 points down in the second half to upset the No. 22 Wolf Pack in Lubbock.

Texas Tech (7-1) went without a field goal for the final five minutes of regulation but made six straight free throws down the stretch, including two from Justin Gray with 23 seconds left to force overtime at 70-70.

Zhaire Smith put the Red Raiders ahead for good on a dunk to start overtime, and Evans scored eight in the extra period.

Miles Bridges scored 21 points, and the thirdranke­d Spartans overcame their worst offensive performanc­e of the season with a victory over the Scarlet Knights in Piscataway, N.J.

Mikal Bridges had his coming out performanc­e as one of top players in the nation, scoring a career-high 28 points to lead the No. 4 Wildcats to a victory over the 12thranked Bulldogs in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Freshman Lonnie Walker IV scored a season-high 26 points, and the No. 10 Hurricanes surged in the second half to beat the Terriers in Coral Gables, Fla.

Tayler Persons hit 3-pointer from the left wing with 1.7 seconds remaining, and the Cardinals shocked the No. 9 Fighting Irish in South Bend, Ind.

Jevon Carter had 23 points and 10 rebounds, Lamont West scored 22 points, and the No. 18 Mountainee­rs beat the 15th-ranked Cavaliers in Morgantown, W.Va., sending Virginia to its first loss.

Colton Weisbrod scored 15 points, Josh Nzeakor added 12, and the Cardinals beat the Celts in Beaumont, improving to 7-1 for their best start to a season in a decade.

Michael Alfred scored 11 points to lead NAIA program St. Thomas (5-5).

Kalani Brown scored 21 points in 12 minutes to lead five players in double figures for the No. 8 Lady Bears in a victory over the Fighting Hawks in Waco.

Lauren Cox added 15 points for Baylor (8-1). Natalie Chou had 13 points and 10 rebounds for her first career doubledoub­le.

Fallyn Freije scored 13 points to lead North Dakota (4-3).
