Arizona St. downs Kansas; Villanova stays undefeated

-

LAWRENCE, Kansas — Bobby Hurley is no stranger to college basketball lore. So when his Arizona State team travelled to Allen Fieldhouse to face Kansas on Sunday, the former Duke star knew what they were in for.

“No one really wins here,” Hurley said. “You come in here, most of the time you’re not leaving real happy.”

The Sun Devils did. Tra Holder scored 29 points on 8-for-16 shooting, and No. 16 Arizona State upset No. 2 Kansas 95-85 on Sunday to improve to 9-0.

Shannon Evans II had 22 points, and Remy Martin added 21 for the Sun Devils. Arizona State shot 50 percent from 3-point range and 50.8 percent overall to hand Kansas (72) its second straight loss after fallingl to Washington Wednesday night.

“I didn’t really have to coach a whole lot tonight,” Hurley said. “These guys sitting with me here deserve all the credit.”

For Kansas, the difference was defense.

“It wasn’t our offense,” coach Bill Self said. “Hey, if you score 85 at home, you’re supposed to win.”

Lagerald Vick led Kansas with 25 points.

VILLANOVA 77 LA SALLE 68

Undefeated Villanova is charging toward the top spot.

“We played the next No. 1 team in the country,” La Salle coach John Giannini said.

The Explorers got a taste of how tough it can be to knock off the Wildcats. La Salle scored more baskets, sank more 3-pointers, had more steals and still was just another win in No. 4 Villanova’s unbeaten season.

Phil Booth scored 18 points and Donte DiVincenzo had 18 points and 10 rebounds to help the Wildcats avoid an upset at Philadelphia.

The Wildcats (10-0) were sloppy, slumped from the 3-point line and could not shake the pesky Explorers (5-6) until the final minutes.

GONZAGA 97 WASHINGTON 70

Johnathan Williams had 23 points and 12 rebounds, Zach Norvell Jr. added 21 points, and the No. 12 Bulldogs won handily at Seattle.

The Bulldogs (8-2) led by 19 in the first half and never let the Huskies put together a sustained run in the second half.

Noah Dickerson led Washington (7-3) with 18 points and David Crisp added 16.

PURDUE 86, IUPUI 61

Carsen Edwards scored a career-high 27 points and the No. 21 Boilermakers won at West Lafayette, Ind., for coach Matt Painter’s 300th victory.

Isaac Haas added 14 points and Vincent Edwards had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Boilermakers (10-2). Maurice Kirby led IUPUI (2-6) with 16.
