Two UT players make first-team All-America list; UH’s Ed Oliver on second team.
Texas safety DeShon Elliott and punter Michael Dickson were named first-team All-America by the Associated Press on Monday, the first time more than one Longhorn has gained that distinction since 2009.
Elliott, a junior who has decided to enter the NFL draft, had six interceptions. Dickson, also a junior, averaged a nationleading 48.4 yards per punt.
In 2009, quarterback Colt McCoy, wide receiver Jordan Shipley and safety Earl Thomas earned firstteam honors.
Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver, a first-teamer in 2016 as a freshman, made the second team, as did Texas linebacker Malik Jefferson. Texas A&M safety Armani Watts was a third-teamer.
No. 2 Oklahoma led the way with three first-team All-Americas, including Heisman Trophywinning quarterback Baker Mayfield. Sooners offensive tackle Orlando Brown and tight end Mark Andrews also were on the first team.
Stanford’s Bryce Love, the Heisman runner-up, and San Diego State’s Rashaad Penny, the nation’s leading rusher and fifth-place finisher for the Heisman, were the firstteam running backs. Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, who finished fourth in the Heisman voting, made the team as an all-purpose player.
Notre Dame (offensive linemen Mike McGlinchey and Quenton Nelson), Ohio State (center Billy Price and cornerback Denzel Ward) and Iowa (linebacker Josey Jewell and cornerback Josh Jackson) joined Texas with two players on the first team.
