Pustejovsky a TD Club winner
Cy-Fair coach Ed Pustejovsky, Ridge Point tight end Mustapha Muhammad and Westfield defensive tackle Keondre Coburn took home honors at the Touchdown Club of Houston’s UIL awards dinner Wednesday night.
Pustejovsky was named Coach of the Year. He’s the first winner from the school since Ronny Peacock in 1999.
Pustejovsky has the Bobcats 13-0 and in a state semifinal for the first time since 1985.
Coburn is the Defensive Player of the Year. The Texas commitment posted 56 tackles, 20 for loss, with two forced fumbles and 7½ sacks in 2017.
Other candidates for the honor were defensive linemen Jaylon Allen (Atascocita), Blake Kuithe (Cinco Ranch), Moro Ojomo (Katy) and Joseph Ossai (Oak Ridge), linebackers Chad Bailey (Ridge Point), Jace Bobo (Cy-Fair), Jackson Shearer (The Woodlands) and Jeremiah Walter (North Shore) and defensive back Cameron Godfrey (Klein Collins).
“It’s amazing,” Coburn said. “It’s unbelievable that I actually won it, because it’s so much talent up there. It’s a shock, but it shows how much work I put in over the summer.”
Muhammad became Ridge Point’s first winner at the awards dinner. The 6-4, 235 pounder, who is committed to Michigan, joins elite company among offensive honorees.
“It puts a smile on my face, because I see guys like Fozzy Whittaker and Darius Anderson and Vince Young, and I’m like, ‘Wow. I’m a part of pretty good company. I’m doing something right,’ ” Muhammad said. “Hopefully, I can continue to stay on the right path and end up like those guys.”
