The Sale: Tri Delta event benefits pediatric cancer research

- By Rebecca Maitland SENIOR LIVING CORRESPONDENT

Without a doubt, senior citizens who remain actively engaged in community service and physical activity are mentally and physically healthier all around.

Many seniors have more time to devote to projects that bring a sense of fulfillment and keep them involved socially.

“Weather it is volunteering with my Tri Delta Alumnae friends at The Sale, being active in my garden club or spending time with my beautiful grandchildren, volunteering is a great way to stay connected while giving back to the community and fostering overall health and well-being and most of all, it is fun,” said Sandra McBride, Tri Delta Houston Chapter member.

The Sale is a two-day charity shopping extravaganza where the cliche “shop ‘til you drop” takes on new meaning when Houston’s boutiques take center stage. The Sale is scheduled for Jan. 6-7 at Bayou City Event Center, 9401 Knight Road. It is presented by Houston Tri Delta alumnae.

The Sale features boutique shopping at with proceeds benefiting Texas Children’s Cancer Center. Now in its fourth year, The Sale has provided over $500,000 to support pediatric cancer research in the Texas Medical Center.

Co-chairs Laura Williams and Dee Dee Robinson said The Sale is one-stop shopping for bargains from Houston’s boutiques — and all for a great cause.

The Sale is also a fun motherdaughter experience, which is another aspect of the event that senior members of Tri Delta appreciate. Volunteering with your adult children or grandchildren, as many seniors testify, makes it more fun, and they appreciate the time they have together.

“My daughter, Tracy McCleary co-chaired the event last year and I could not be prouder of how she and her co-chair Laura Williams continued the Tri Delta mission of service. It is great to see generations of Tri-Deltas coming together from all areas of the community to work toward a common cause making a real impact in the lives of children battling cancer,” said McBride, a Tri-Delta Houston Chapter member.

Over 50 retailers will be participating and will offer designer clothing, jewelry, shoes and accessories for women, children and men, along with gifts, home decor and more. A growing list of vendors includes a bientôt, Anna Irion, Back Row Home, Dimensions, Elaine Turner, Fig Tree, Hunter Bell, Jeanette, A Unique Boutique, KB Kasuals, M. Wiesenthal, Monica Haff Designs, Patricia Peckinpaugh, Pinto Ranch, Presmer, Raspberry Rose and Tres Chic.

“We are so grateful for the generous support of the Houston Tri Delta alumnae,” said Dr. David Poplack, director of Texas Children’s Cancer Center. “Thanks to the proceeds of great events like this, our team is able to continue performing innovative research and providing our patients with the most advanced care.”

The Sale is open to the public noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6; and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

A Champagne Shopping Preview will take place 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 6. Tickets are $150 per person.

“The Houston Tri Delta Alumnae Chapter is committed to supporting local pediatric cancer research,” Robinson said. “We encourage everyone to join us as we shop to cure childhood cancer here in Houston.”
