HAZEL TULLY GATES

1905-2017

Hazel Tully Gates, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Charleston, West Virginia, died on December 23, 2017, at the age of 112. She was born on April 6, 1905, in Charleston, West Virginia to the late Harry Lee Tully and Lucy McIntosh Tully. She was an employee of the Columbia Gas Company for over thirty years. After her retirement she served as a volunteer for many years at the Women and Children’s Hospital in Charleston. She was an avid gardener, wonderful cook and accomplished quilter. In her later years, she delighted in watching her great grandsons grow up and spending time with her granddaughters and their husbands. She was active both mentally and physically to the end of her life, mastering crossword puzzles, enjoying jokes and staying abreast of current events. Her spirit of joy, kindness, generosity and gratitude endeared her to all who met her.

She is preceded in death by her husband Louis “Fritz” Gates, her daughter, Norma O’Dell Hobbs, her brothers, James C. Tully and Harry A. Tully, and sister, Lillian Tully Moss. She is survived by her granddaughter Nancy Hobbs and her husband Dr. Edgar Boedeker of Albuquerque, New Mexico; her granddaughter Susan Hobbs Boone and her husband James A. Boone of Houston, Texas; her granddaughter Mary Anne Hobbs McDaniel and her husband J. Allen McDaniel of Austin, Texas; and her great grandchildren Arthur Upshaw “Trey” Boone III, Tyler McIntosh Boone and Maxwell Hobbs McDaniel.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the loving staff of The Forum at Memorial Woods for their care of our beloved grandmother.

A service will be held on Friday, December 29th at 1:00 p.m. at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, 1118 Virginia Street East, Charleston, WVA 25301.
