-

Independence

Who: Florida State (6-6) vs. Southern Miss (8-4). When/where: 12:30 p.m.; Independence Stadium, Shreveport, La. TV: ESPN. Notable: Florida State started the season with national championship aspirations but will instead end in the relative obscurity of a minor bowl. The Seminoles needed to win four of their last five just to become bowl-eligible for a record 35th consecutive season. Florida State will try to slow a Southern Miss offense that’s led by running back Ito Smith, a senior who has run for nearly 4,500 career yards, including 1,323 this season. Who: Iowa (7-5) vs. Boston College (7-5). When/where: 4:15 p.m.; Yankee Stadium, New York. TV: ESPN. Notable: Iowa will be trying to win its first bowl game since 2010 after losing five in a row. The Hawkeyes hope to give coach Kirk Ferentz his 142nd career victory, which would match Hayden Fry’s school record. Under coach Steve Addazio, Boston College has had four seven-win seasons in his five years at BC. He could get the program to eight wins for the first time since 2009. He’s also the first coach to lead the Eagles to four bowls in five years.

Foster Farms

Who: Purdue (6-6) vs. Arizona (7-5). When/where: 7:30 p.m.; Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, Calif. TV: Fox. Notable: Just getting to a bowl game has made Jeff Brohm’s first season as Purdue’s coach a success after the program won a total of nine games in the previous four seasons. Purdue will be tested by dynamic Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate. Tate rushed for 1,353 yards and 12 touchdowns and passed for 1,289 yards and nine TDs after taking over the team in the fifth game of the season. Purdue’s strength defensively is on run defense. The Boilermakers allowed just 3.6 yards per carry this season and held four of their final five opponents to under 100 yards.
