Boy, 13, killed, 2 teens wounded in ambush
A 13-year-old boy died and two other teens were hurt in a shooting late Thursday night outside a southeast Houston apartment complex, police said.
Investigators said the shooting occurred at about 10:25 p.m. near Selinsky Road and Sesame, about a half-mile west of Sterling Aviation High School. All three victims were hospitalized. The two surviving boys, ages 14 and 17, were expected to recover from their injuries.
The identity of the 13-year-old victim hadn’t been released as of Friday afternoon. Police initially reported he was 14 but later corrected his age.
A motive for the shooting wasn’t immediately released, though police said they’re investigating whether it’s gang-related. Police said “at least two, possibly three” shooters might have been involved.
“We don’t really have any eyeball witnesses at this time, but if there was anybody out here that saw what happened, we need to know about it,” Detective W.L. Meeler said.
“These are children, and they don’t appear to have any type of history that would get them in this situation. This is one of those where we really need the public’s help.”
Meeler said the available evidence indicates the shooters “basically ambushed” the victims as they stood outside the complex. The shooters appeared to be on foot, as opposed to engaging in a drive-by, Meeler said.
