PRETTY AND STRONG IN PINK

SWEAT 1000 INSTRUCTORS MAKE SURE THERE’S NEVER A DULL MOMENT

- BY AMBER ELLIOTT amber.elliott@chron.com

Don’t let their lilting accents fool you. South African fitness instructors Ana Barron Strouse and Natasha Smith are two tough women.

Barron Strouse and her husband, Jordan Strouse, partnered with SWEAT 1000’s Cape Town founders, Andrew Rothschild and Paul Rothschild, to bring a new, high-intensity workout to Houston. Specifically, the Heights area. Smith, a lead instructor, is in charge of training the instructors at the Heights location.

Next to the space formerly occupied by Bernadine’s and Hunky Dory (#RIP), the married duo introduce the one-hour, actionpacked classes favored by Springboks (aka South Africa’s national rugby union team), Extreme Fighting Championship mixed martial artists and “Sports Illustrated” models.

In respect to the latter, Barron Strouse and Smith certainly look the part. Stylewise, they’re always on-brand in SWEAT 1000 gear, but with a normcore twist. Barron Strouse coordinates fuchsia Puma trainers and a classic Nike tank to complement her floral activewear; Smith got the same fashion memo and matched in coral top and neon kicks.

No two SWEAT 1000 routines are alike. Any given drill might include stair climbing on the treadmill, floor work with free weights, boxing, mat exercises and who knows what else. From now through the studio’s midJanuary opening date, customers can sign up for free trial classes and get a jump-start on those New Year’s resolutions.

Wondering how to dress when you don’t know what to expect? Follow Barron Strouse and Smith’s colorhappy example. Because if you’re burning 1,000 calories per session — that’s no random figure, folks — a vibrant outfit is the best motivation.

ANA BARRON STROUSE, LEFT, AND NATASHA SMITH MAKE SURE THAT NO TWO WORKOUTS ARE EVER THE SAME.
