HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

- Adam Coleman

Boys

Micah Peavy, Dekaney

Notable: The fast-rising 6-7 sophomore forward, who holds an offer from Texas A&M, had 25 points and nine rebounds in a 97-72 victory at rival Spring, improving the state-ranked Wildcats to 20-3 and 3-0 in District 166A. Peavy had five dunks in the victory, including an emphatic alley-oop slam off a pass from older brother D.J. Peavy from the 3-point line.

What coach David Peavy said: “Last year, as a freshman, it was real tough for him being coached by me, his dad. It’s tough getting yelled at in pressure situations, and it was hard for him to separate dad and coach. But this year, he’s really matured a whole lot. He’s got a long way to go, but he’s really learning how to play hard and starting to figure out how talented he is.”

Other nominees

Kharee McDaniel, Klein Forest: The junior guard registered a teamhigh 25 points on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range and 9-of-13 from the field with three steals in a 58-42 victory over Klein.

Joseph Ogunbanjo, Alief Taylor: The 6-4 senior forward led the Lions in scoring last week, scoring 22 points in a 53-52 victory over Pearland and 16 in a 70-51 victory over Elsik.

C.J. Washington, Tompkins: The 6-4 senior guard scored 22 of his career-high 28 points in the first half of an 81-64 victory over Katy. Washington also had eight points and 10 rebounds in an 83-72 win over Strake Jesuit. Jason McDaniel

Girls

Riley Halloran, Conroe

Notable: She hit a last-second, game-winning 3-pointer to help lead Conroe past Montgomery 49-47 in Friday’s District 12-6A opener.

What coach Tamisha Houston said: “Anybody who knows Riley knows she looks to pass first and she’s second. So she pivots to try and pass to somebody and in her ear she hears everybody yelling, ‘Shoot, shoot, shoot.’ So she pivots again, and she shoots it and sinks a 3-pointer from the corner.” Other nominees

Joanne Allen-Taylor, Cypress Falls: The Texas commitment’s game-high 32 points helped Cypress Falls earn a key district victory over Cypress Woods.

Emma Ebert, Kingwood: Ebert turned in a hat trick as Kingwood cruised by Brazoswood 4-0.

Macey Braswell, Pearland: She scored 14 points in a 54-24 victory over Hastings — the Oilers’ 10th consecutive win.
