UH hammers East Carolina; Virginia wins eighth straight

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Corey Davis Jr. scored 20 points, Fabian White Jr. added 17 with six rebounds and three blocks, and Houston easily handled East Carolina with a 65-49 win Sunday.

Davis and White combined to shoot 15-for-22 from the field, though the rest of the Cougars mustered just 11-of-44 shooting. Rob Gray added 12 points with nine assists.

Houston (14-3, 4-1 American Athletic Conference) used a 15-3 run early to build a 22-9 advantage when Davis made three 3s — two in succession — and Wes VanBeck made a 3 and followed with a jumper.

Gray’s 3-point play with 1:57 before halftime made it 30-12. He followed with a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer, and the Cougars led 36-17 at the break.

Shawn Williams led East Carolina (7-10, 1-5) with 17 points.

VIRGINIA 68 NORTH CAROLINA ST. 51

Devon Hall scored a career-best 25 points, and the No. 3 Cavaliers pushed their winning streak to eight with a victory over the Wolfpack in Charlottes­ville, Va.

Kyle Guy added 17 points for Virginia (16-1, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). The Cavaliers have won 11 straight regularsea­son meetings against the Wolfpack.

Torin Dorn scored 16 points to lead North Carolina State (12-6, 2-3), which arrived with a 3-0 record against ranked teams.

INCIDENT UNDER REVIEW

West Virginia’s athletic department said Sunday it is reviewing an incident in which a player is seen striking a Texas Tech fan who had joined thousands of others in a postgame celebratio­n.

Video posted on social media by fans at the game in Lubbock show forward Wes Harris and other West Virginia players trying to reach the sideline as fans swarmed the court Saturday in celebratio­n of No. 8 Texas Tech’s 72-71 win over No. 2 West Virginia.

The videos appear to show Harris striking a fan who had run into him before Harris is pulled away. Other players were involved in a separate skirmish trying to protect a teammate in the swarm. Women

BAYLOR 74, OKLAHOMA 52 Dekeiya Cohen scored 16 points, and the No. 5 Lady Bears defeated the Sooners in Norman, Okla.

Baylor (15-1, 5-0 Big 12) rolled despite getting just nine points from leading scorer Kalani Brown. The 6-7 junior, who entered averaging 21.5 points per game, played just 15 minutes because of foul trouble.

GEORGIA 92, TEXAS A&M 84

Freshman Gabby Connally returned to her home state and scored 37 points, 15 in overtime, to lead the Bulldogs to an overtime upset of the No. 17 Aggies in College Station.

Connally, from San Antonio, came in averaging 8.8 points per game with a season high of 13 but against the Aggies made 10 of 17 shots, including four 3-pointers, plus 13 of 14 free throws.

Chennedy Carter had 31 points for Texas A&M (14-5, 3-2), reaching 386 this season and eclipsing the Aggies’ freshman season scoring record.

TENNESSEE 86 SOUTH CAROLINA 70

Jaime Nared scored 19 points as the sixth-ranked Lady Vols bounced back from their first loss of the season with a victory over the host No. 9 Gamecocks, who played without injured All-American A’ja Wilson.

OREGON 74, ARIZONA ST. 64

Sabrina Ionescu scored 26 points and Ruthy Hebard added 20 to lead the eighth-ranked Ducks to a victory over the No. 18 Sun Devils in Eugene, Ore.
