‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ vies for worst movie of 2017

- By Cary Darling

“Transformers: The Last Knight,” with its meager 16 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, was one of the most reviled films of 2017. And now, its status as the worst movie of the year could become official. It leads the pack with nine nominations at the 38th Golden Raspberry Awards (aka The Razzies), the annual celebration of the very worst in cinema, which was announced Monday.

The Michael Bay-directed robot slugfest is competing in just about every category, including worst picture, worst director, worst actor (Mark Wahlberg), worst remake, ripoff or sequel, and worst screen combo for “any combination of two humans, two robots or two explosions.”

The film even manages to snag two nominations for supporting actor, Josh Duhamel and Anthony Hopkins. It’s enough to make Optimus Prime weep.

The only category where it escaped derision was for best actress. But, rest assured, if there had been more women in the movie, it definitely would have been a contender.

But Bay wasn’t the only one to blame for bad times at the movies last year.

Nipping at the heels of “Transformers: The Last Knight” is the leather-clad

romantic thriller “Fifty Shades Darker,” which has being thrown shade in eight categories, including worst picture, worst actress (Dakota Johnson), and worst screen combo for “any combination of two characters, two sex toys or two sexual positions.”

“The Mummy” stumbles into third place with seven nominations, including worst picture and worst actor (Tom Cruise).

Other films scoring multiple nods are “Baywatch” (four), “The Emoji Movie” (four), “Mother!” (three), “Boo 2: A Madea Halloween” (three), “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” (three) and “Daddy’s Home 2” (two).

Wahlberg and Hopkins are nominated twice in different categories. In addition to begin recognized for his subpar work in “Transformers: The Last Knight,” Wahlberg earns his worst actor recognition for his part in “Daddy’s Home 2.” Similarly, Hopkins might end up with a Raspberry on his mantle for his work in “Collide” as well as “The Last Knight.”

Javier Bardem also got into the supporting actor lineup with roles in both “Mother!” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.”

The winners will be announced March 3, the day before the Oscars ceremony. Speaking of which, Oscar nominations will be announced Tuesday morning.
