Regarding “Trump loves a big parade, has generals fall into step” (Page A14, Wednesday), the president’s wish for a lavish parade is not surprising given his apparent obsession with size and admiration for strongmen like Vladimir Putin. North Korea holds big military parades, so why shouldn’t Donald Trump have a bigger one to go with his bigger nuclear button?

However, history shows us that in the U.S. displays of America’s military might largely have been reserved for celebration of our fighting forces after winning a war.

If Trump truly wants to honor our troops, maybe he could spend the parade money on something that actually benefits those who serve. Better medical care for veterans comes to mind. Aletha Evert, Houston
