COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M freshman guard J.J. Caldwell was dismissed from the team, and freshman guard Jay Jay Chandler was suspended indefinitely after the two were arrested early Sunday for possession of marijuana.

The school announced the punishments, saying the pair violated Texas A&M policy.

Brazos County Jail records indicate both players were arrested by Texas A&M police on Sunday for marijuana possession. They each posted $2,000 bond and were released.

Caldwell, who played three seasons at Cypress Woods before being home-schooled his senior year, has had several missteps during his time at A&M. He sat out last season because of academic issues after signing with the Aggies.

Caldwell’s playing time recently had diminished with the emergence of freshman T.J. Starks. Chandler has played in 24 of 25 games and been a sparkplug off the bench for A&M (17-8, 6-6 SEC).

CINCINNATI 76, SMU 51

Kyle Washington had 17 points, and the No. 6 Bearcats remained undefeated in American Athletic Conference play, stretching their winning streak to 16 games with an easy victory over the Mustangs at Dallas.

Cincinnati (23-2, 12-0) missed its first seven shots but was down only 5-2 when it scored on a dunk by Nysier Brooks, triggering a 9-0 run that put the Bearcats ahead to stay.

Jimmy Whitt and Jahmal McMurray each had 19 points for SMU (15-10, 5-7).

DUKE 80, GEORGIA TECH 69

Grayson Allen scored 23 points as the No. 9 Blue Devils beat the host Yellow Jackets.

Duke (20-5, 8-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) won without center Marvin Bagley, the ACC’s leading scorer and rebounder. The freshman sat out with a mild right knee sprain.

MICHIGAN 83, WISCONSIN 72

Moe Wagner scored 20 points, went 8-of-14 from the field and added 11 rebounds, and the No. 20 Wolverines beat the Badgers in Madison, Wis.

VIRGINIA NO. 1 IN EARLY BRACKET

Although Virginia suffered a surprising home loss to unranked Virginia Tech on Saturday, ending its winning streak at 16 games, its status wasn’t diminished in the eyes of the NCAA Division I Basketball Committee.

Virginia was the top overall seed in preliminary NCAA Tournament rankings released a day after the loss. Villanova, Xavier and Purdue earned the other No. 1 seeds.
