Gunnell decommits from Texas A&M
St. Pius X quarterback Grant Gunnell announced his decision to decommit from Texas A&M in a Twitter post Tuesday night.
Gunnell is the state’s top-rated quarterback, according to 247Sports’ rankings for the class of 2019. He’d been committed to A&M since June.
Gunnell, however, said in his Twitter post that “Texas A&M is still very much in play.”
Gunnell threw for 4,936 yards and 61 touchdowns last season. In other college news: • The NCAA denied Notre Dame’s appeal of a decision to vacate 21 football victories because of academic misconduct, including all 12 wins from the school’s 2012 national championship game run.
In a letter to Notre Dame alumni, university President Fr. John Jenkins criticized the ruling, saying the penalty was unprecedented considering who was involved in the misconduct, and the school was being punished for rigorously enforcing its honor code. He called the ruling unfair, referencing the recent North Carolina case in which the NCAA did not punish the school after an investigation of athletes taking irregular courses.
As a result of the ruling, Texas and Ohio State moved past Notre Dame into a tie for second place on the NCAA’s all-time wins list with 898, behind Michigan (943). Notre Dame (885) fell to sixth.
• The NCAA is considering allowing athletes who are doing well in the classroom to transfer with immediate eligibility and permitting incoming freshmen to back out of a letter of intent if there is a coaching change.
