Abbott appoints 3 regents to UH
A trio of Houston businessmen were appointed to the University of Houston’s System Board of Regents by Gov. Greg Abbott, according to a news release issued from the university on Monday.
The new regents — Doug Brooks, Joe Gutierrez and Jack Moore — will each serve a sixyear term.
“I could not be more pleased with Governor Abbott’s thoughtful approach to the leadership of the University of Houston System,” said Renu Khator, chancellor of the UH System. “Each appointee has shown great dedication to the success of UH throughout their careers, and I am excited about how they will work to move all of our universities forward.”
All three regents are alumni of the university.
Doug Brooks graduated from the Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management program and is the first alum from the school to be inducted into the Hospitality Industry Hall of Honor. Brooks is the retired chairman, president and CEO of Brinker International, a casual dining restaurant company that includes
spots like Chili’s Grill & Bar and Maggiano’s Little Italy.
The second regent is Moore, who has a degree from the University of Houston and also attended Harvard Business School.
Moore worked at Baker Hughes for more than 20 years and went on to serve as chairman and chief executive officer for Cameron International Corp.
The third regent, Gutierrez, graduated from the C.T. Bauer College of Business Executive MBA program. He has worked in the energy industry for more than 30 years and currently serves as the CEO of Novi Ventures.
The Bauer College’s Gutierrez Energy Management Institute, which is used as a resource to prepare business leaders for the energy industry, is named after him.
“All three of these men have achieved success with the knowledge they gained from the University of Houston and they are passionate about giving back. What an opportunity this is for all our universities in the UH System,” said Tilman Fertitta, chairman of the UHS Board of Regents.
The UHS Board of Regents is made up of nine members and a student regent. The current governor of Texas appoints three members to the Board of Regents every two years, which is subject to Senate confirmation.
A regular board member serves a six-year term and nonvoting student regents serve a one-year term. The University of Houston, University of Houston-Clear Lake, University of Houston-Downtown and University of Houston-Victoria are represented by system board.
The new regents replaced Spencer Armour III, Roger F. Welder and Welcome W. Wilson Jr., whose terms expired last fall.
